Walled gardens have long been the site of innovation and enchantment at the heart of country estates. Poems, plays and prose throughout the centuries have encouraged us to imagine secret worlds within their walls. They are also fascinating repositories of wisdom and technological ingenuity, showing us how past generations provided for large communities all year-round. But despite once playing a vital role, many of Britain’s walled gardens were lost during the last century, becoming untenable as vast changes swept through agriculture, society and the global economy.
