Archerfield Walled Garden
Built in the late 1780’s, the walled garden originally supplied produce to Archerfield House. Although records are scarce, an article from 1865 (Journal of Horticulture and Cottage Gardens) shows remarkable productivity with an extensive range of glasshouses. These included vineries, peach and forcing houses, pineapple pits and melon frames. In the last century, the walled garden underwent many changes, including a market garden and a cattle court before its redevelopment to its current guise in 2013 with the opening of the Café, Gift Shop and Food Market.
The regeneration of the garden commenced in 2015 under the direction of head gardener Erica Randall. The new layout continues the tradition of providing seasonal crops, but also aims to engage visitors of all ages to learn about plants and the natural world.
The one-acre site is divided into several themed zones designed to carefully lead the visitor through a succession of changing spaces full of visual surprises and plant interest. Already developed are the car park ‘hot’ borders, perennial meadow, cut flowers, potager, perennial vegetables, rose garden, wildlife and an ornamental ‘light and dark’ border. Different team members take responsibility for these individual areas allowing them to put their own style on the garden, and hopefully, create a more stimulating experience for our visitors.
Beyond the walls the estate offers a range of scenic walks and a variety of family friendly features, including our Fairy Trail and Willow Walk. Our Garden Café and Food Market provide a range of delicious food and drinks, while the Garden Shop sells plants, gifts, garden and homeware.
