  • The Gardens at Archerfield Walled Garden

Built in the late 1780’s, Archerfield Walled Garden (AWG) originally provided produce to Archerfield House. Although records are scarce, an article from 1865 (Journal of Horticulture and Cottage Gardens) shows remarkable productivity with an extensive range of glasshouses. These included vineries, peach and forcing houses, pineapple pits and melon frames. In the last century, the walled garden took on many roes, including as a market garden and cattle court. In 2013, after redevelopment AWG opened its gates to the public and now offers a garden café, food market and plant shop.
The regeneration of the garden itself began in 2015 under the direction of the then head gardener Erica Randall. The new layout continues the tradition of providing seasonal crops, but also aims to engage visitors of all ages to learn about plants and the natural world.
The one-acre site is divided into themed areas full of visual surprises and plant interest. Already developed for the visitor to explore are a perennial meadow, rose garden, wildlife area with pond & stumpery, perennial vegetable bed, productive tunnel & potager and flower beds for cutting & drying. We are working currently on light and dark themed ornamental borders and a sustainable gardening area and have plans to develop a drought garden.
You can find us in The Scotland’s Gardens Scheme website and handbook under: The Gardens at Archerfield Walled Garden.
Beyond the walls you’ll find hot borders in our carpark and on the wider estate; a range of scenic walks and a variety of family friendly fun, including our Fairy Trail and Willow Walk. Our Garden Café and Food Market provide a range of delicious food and drink, while the Garden Shop sells plants, pots, garden equipment homeware and gifts.
