Scottish garden of the season: Cambo

August 31st 2016

Visiting Cambo in Late Summer

Cambo House and Gardens has been home to the Erskine family since 1688 and offers visitors a wide variety of experiences. Discover the extensive plant collections surrounding the House and in the Walled Garden, explore the woodland walks along the Cambo burn and enjoy the sandy beach at the edge of Kingsbarns golf course.

Cambo1

We like to think of Cambo as a garden for all seasons however late Summer is perhaps one of the best times to visit. From July to September the 2.5 Acre walled garden and the surrounding areas are bursting with colour. The carefully themed Naturalistic late season plantings reach a crescendo. These habitat based plantings reflect and draw inspiration from  key natural grassland regions of the world.  With its extensive collection of perennials and grasses there is plenty to enjoy for both the amateur and the professional gardener.

Late season Naturalistic borders

Cambo2

Hardworking,  low maintenance and beautiful these generous nature inspired plantings are located throughout the walled garden and provide the flowering backbone  to our late display.  Here you will find a wide range of  natural looking high performance hardy perennials,  grasses and bulbs. Each bed is individually themed  to explore different aspects of  colour, form  and wildness.

Potager

Cambo3

The ornamental potager is our contemporary  reinterpretation of the traditional potager.   It is a colourful riot of over two and a half thousand annuals, tender and hardy perennials, ornamental vegetables and grasses.  The potager  is meticulously redesigned every year to explore a different theme.  It provides us with a vibrant centre to the walled garden, packed with ideas and a source of inspiration for our garden visitors.

North American Prairie

Cambo4

Immerse yourself in this 700m2 planting which distils 3 regions of North American prairie.   Containing over 50 species of wildflowers sourced from the American mid west. Packed with Asters, Echinaceas and ornamental grasses the prairie planting  looks stunning in August and September. It is the wildest of our plantings and one of our most popular attractions, providing a stunning flowering climax to our year.
